@iwannagohomestead *Reposting because the original’s speed was messed up when I posted last time. Also, update: a total of 5 baby chicks hatched, they are over 2 weeks old and all doing wonderfully!* Let me start out by saying, the chick is ALIVE and HEALTHY!! I will also admit as this is my first time hatching chicks, that I had no idea what I was doing or what I was supposed to do, and I did not think I had time to look up the answer before moving forward. I’m glad that what I decided to do ended with a positive outcome! So… the story!! I was collecting eggs for the day, and there are always a couple eggs that get pushed out the besting boxes and land inside the main area of their coop. I collected those two eggs and brought them inside with the other collected eggs. These eggs had sand on them so I used a paper towel to wipe them off. When I wiped off this egg, a piece of the shell broke off. I was confused. It looked like I was peeling a boiled egg. I started taking more of the shell off waiting for the egg to crack in my hands, and it never did. Then I poked the white part and felt something hard on the inside and realized what had happened. My hatching eggs were marked with pencil but it had rubbed off. I figured out that it had to be one of the hatching eggs that had fallen out from other my broody hen. Like I said, I didn’t know what to do, and I had already peeled off so much of the shell. I didn’t know if it would survive if I put it back. The egg was cold. I thought there was no way there was an alive chick in there anyways, so I decided to continue to open it. I very slowly peeled open the white membrane, and then the clear sac, and out came the chick. Its head flopped to the side and I knew it was dead. I cupped it in my hands and suddenly its beak opened for a breath. I rubbed its head and it chirped! It was breathing and chirping and I could not believe it! I hatched an egg! Definitely not the way it should’ve been hatched, but it happened. It could’ve been placed in a carton if it never cracked in the first place! I placed it under the hen and she accepted it. Warmed it up as its feathers dried off, and now it is healthy, eating, and drinking water. That was the start of my day yesterday and how baby chick #2♬ original sound - Kailey • I Wanna Go Homestead
