Tesla’s Latest Idea for Combating Range Loss Involves Hot Air, and It’s Serious
Tesla continues to amaze with its unconventional solutions, and this time it’s about a patent for an inflatable spoiler designed for the Cybertruck pickup. This device, called an “inflatable aerodynamic deflector,” could significantly improve the vehicle’s efficiency during towing.Using drop-stitch technology, similar to that used in inflatable surfboards, the device in its folded state takes up minimal space in the Cybertruck’s bed. During towing, it inflates, forming a wedge-shaped structure that continues the line of the cabin and windshield, extending several feet and ending before the rear tailgate. The main goal of this invention is to reduce aerodynamic drag by smoothing the airflow over the cabin and trailer. This will increase the range during towing, which is critically important for electric vehicles, especially considering their weight and the limited charging network.
